Best of British: Why Tweed is the Hottest Fabric this Season

Fashion is constantly changing with new influences making their way onto the catwalk every season. The experimental nature of recent fashion has seen some vibrant and inventive styles reach our wardrobes. However, despite the various prints and colours available, it appears that major fashion houses are selecting the legendarily British pattern Harris Tweed for their latest collections as reported in The Telegraph.

About Tweed

Harris Tweed Hebrides has always been a staple of British fashion and since opening a new mill on the island of Lewis in 2007, the pattern has seen a huge resurgence in popularity. The popular patterns used for tweed cloth include houndstooth, which became popular in the sixties, and gamekeeper's tweed which is renowned as being the chosen pattern for academic professors. The cloth, which is handwoven and coloured with lichen and vegetable dyes, has been a figurehead in terms of internationally-known British fabric patterns and this notoriety seems to have prompted a newfound patriotic nature amongst fashion designers.

Must-Have Heritage

The nature of heritage clothing is not a new one as many labels proudly support British fabric mills, however the heritage chic that appears in designers' new collections adds a must-have element, mixing the long-established tweed pattern with a new sense of fashion cool. Fashion powerhouses such as Alexander McQueen and Vivian Westwood have used it in their autumn/winter collections helping to shake off its stiff-upper-lip reputation and introducing it to a new generation of contemporary fashion lovers.
